Lutheranism is a quilt of many colors. It's large enough to "vrap around everyone and it's as freeing as a magic carpet ride. The following patchwork essay is a quilt of ideas, feelings, impressions and personal beliefs about Pacific Lutheran.
As in most western fam ily n a mes, the last, or surname, places one in a pa rticular family: PLU is a university as opposed to. Here, the "Lutheran" in Pacific Lutheran Url iversity proudly shows the resp ect the founders had for our Lutheran traditions, heritage and glo ry. The word Lutheran gives us our heritage, our com m itment to God, our sense of being ami our service to o thers. I was a little frightened about my daughter going off to college, but because of this school's middle nal' le, I felt a little better, because I believed there would be values in that institution that I understood In a world where people are on the move and often without a sense of permanence, it is exciting to be connected to a place that has.

PLU was. It held religio us tenets as one reason fo r its existence, and education as a primary reason. It lived, for me, as a small a lld exceedingly precious world in the midst of chaos. Tha t hope may seem old-fash ioned, b u t I p ro m ise. But let it be said that the university is not the church, a reality sometimes misunderstood even by supporters. At the same time, we are not a state school nor do we want to become a university severed from its roots in the church.
Rather, our vision of a university of the church sees it as a unique place where the interplay of faith and reason, the sacred and secular, the reign of God and the created order find mutual conversation.
This has certainly been true in the recent past. Developing a m ission statement has been one response to the concerns and confusion. Ro land Bainton, a wel l -known Lutheran scholar and a u t hor, has written in h is typically earthy and co mpell ing way that Luther embraced secular life - the wonders o f nat ure, eating and d r i nking, whining dogs, screa m i ng children, ma rried love, i n t i m ate friendship, and the necess ity of education.

Second, although PLU has a partnership with school d istricts now, there would be greater involvement, Brickell said. Potential complications with the residency regulation still need to be i roned out.
If a new teacher has a residency far from his or her college of teacher training and graduation s uch as a P LU student taking a job in Spokaneor if a new teacher Les Mocassins - Mino - Le Chef De La Bande in a remote area with no colleges nearby, a joint recommendation from the school district and a college that could adequately evaluate the student thro ugh classroom observations could present several d i fficulties.
But j unior high school teacher George Obermiller '95 said this would not have been a problem for him. Obermiller teaches six classes of drama a day at West Valley J r. H igh in Yakima, Wash. He said the West Valley School District has a professor from nearby Heritage College that works with the teachers at h is school.
Besides, Obermiller said, beginning teachers in his district are on a two-year probationary period during which administrators observe them in the classroom through at least two formal and several informal observations per year, much like the proposed residency requirement.
S k i l l s assessment. Gwen Hundley '91, a junior high health science teacher, answers a student's question in class. The changes have been in the works for two years. The state board reviews the recommendations and grants the license. The teacher then has other requ irements to meet over time to receive a continui ng certificate, Brickell added.
One of the major changes being considered is the addition of a two-year residency. This would create three levels of certi fication the residency certificate, professional certificate and advanced professional certificate instead of two initial certificate and continuing certificate. Under the proposed system, instead of t h e un iversity making recommendations for graduates to receive initia l certification, it would recommend graduates receive a residency certificate.
The new teacher would then be hired by a school district, and work there - for two years with full pay - as a resident. Passing a basic skills and knowledge assessment before being licensed is also among the major proposed changes. Oregon and Cabfornia already require such exams, which poten tial teachers must take to be certified. If adopted i n Washington, the assessment would include more performance-based evaluations.
Brickell expects PLU students to do fi ne with the proposed changes. They also carry out other field experiences, such as required practicums.
